Are eSIMs safe? You Need To Know About Security

An eSIM card is the latest connectivity solution for travellers and tech users. But are eSIMs safe to use? Definitely, eSIM is secure if purchased by a reliable provider, like Phonico.

eSIM technology is a digital chip installed in the latest devices, is more secure than the physical SIM card. It lets you avoid physical SIM swapping during international travel. In this article, I will clear your eSIM security doubts and discuss how it ensures your personal data security.

Are eSIMs Really Safe?

Yes, compared to traditional SIM cards, eSIM offers security advantages for travellers and other tech users. Digital SIM fits into the eSIM-compatible devices and lets your device access a seamless internet connection.

It digitally stores the user's information, which prevents the user's data from unauthorised access. Embedded SIMs comparatively have minor chances of being hacked or stolen. It reduces SIM swapping and ensures safety and control.

Understanding the Core of eSIM Security

An embedded SIM is a programmable chip that saves your subscriber identity and connects you to your mobile network. Digital SIMs have no access point, so it's difficult to remove or cloned from the devices.

An eSIM card is encrypted, so you require the QR code scan to activate it. You can also activate eSIM in your iPhone or Android device via the carrier app. It works like a digital lockbox; your phone handles network verification to protect your data from unauthorised access.

Inside the Security Wall: What Protects Your eSIM?

The following are the major security benefits of eSIMs.

• End-to-End Encryption: It ensures secure data exchanges between your device and the carrier.
• No physical Handle: No one can remove, steal, delete, or misplace the eSIM from your phone.
• Authentication System: Digital SIM activation needs verified network approval.

Here are the security features of eSIM and the physical SIM to clarify your doubts.

Traditional SIM cards

• Physical Access: Removable from the devices.
• SIM Swapping Risk: High swapping risk.
• Encryption: Basic encryption.
• Activation: Manual SIM activation.
• Theft Risk: SIM can be stolen and damage.

Embedded SIM Cards

• Physical Access: Securily integrated into a mobile phone.
• SIM Swapping Risk: Very low swapping risk.
• Encryption: Advanced security.
• Activation: QR code eSIM activation.
• Theft Risk: No risk of the SIM being stolen.

The Hidden Safety Factors

An embedded SIM card is safe, but the safety depends on the carrier's protection policies and device software updates. If you select the eSIM of the trusted provider, it includes carrier-grade encryption to protect your profiles.

Before selecting the carrier, ensure how it stores your personal data and phone number. When you set up the dual SIM, manage network settings to avoid privacy issues.

Are eSIMs Safer for Travelling?

Yes, eSIM is a safe tool to stay connected during international travel. As I discussed earlier, eSIM is installed into the phone's hardware so that it cannot be stolen or damaged. You can travel to different countries with a single eSIM card.

It is ideal to take photos of your travel memories and share them with your social media friends. Moreover, the following are the advantages of eSIM that you can enjoy during travel.

• No worry of managing multiple SIM cards: With a regional eSIM, you can travel to the different countries of a region. It lets you avoid worrying about picking up and managing multiple SIM cards simultaneously.
• eSIM works with the primary SIM card: In the dual SIM device, you can use the eSIM and the physical SIM card simultaneously. You can use the digital SIM for data and the SIM card for making calls and texting your family and friends.
• Built-in encryption: eSIM is encrypted, which makes it difficult for malicious actors to steal your personal information.
• Avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi networks: eSIM provides reliable access to the mobile networks. It lets you avoid connecting your phone to the unsecured public WiFi.
