Why eSIM May Not Work? Even If Your Phone Says It Should!

You’ve done your research. Your phone is on the “compatible” list. But when you try to activate your eSIM, nothing happens. Why?

That’s because eSIM support isn’t just about the model name. It depends on a few hidden details that most travellers overlook:

Device Variant

Just because the model number matches doesn’t mean the hardware supports eSIM. Phones sold in China, Hong Kong, and some Middle Eastern countries often come with dual nano-SIM slots only, and no eSIM capability at all.

Carrier Locking

If your phone is carrier-locked, you won’t be able to activate a third-party eSIM, no matter how compatible the phone is. Always check if your phone is unlocked before you travel.

Software or Firmware Updates

Some phones don’t show the eSIM option until the software is fully updated. This is especially common with older Android models or imported devices. If you don’t see “Add eSIM” in your network settings, check for available updates first.

Pro Tip for Travellers

Before you buy any eSIM plan, Phonico or otherwise, do this quick check:

Go to your phone settings → Mobile Network → Look for an option like “Add eSIM” or “SIM Manager.”

If you see it, you're good to go.
