eSIM iMessage Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It (2026 Guide)
Are you Having Trouble with eSIM iMessage? Don't worry—there are solutions that you can perform yourself. Read the blog to learn about them & other alternatives
A unique feature of iOS users is that many apps are only usable by them because they are made to run on iOS devices. Just as Airdrop works between iOS devices only, the iMessage app is designed to share text messages, visuals, photos, videos, and other shareable data between iPhone users. As more and more iPhone users turn towards eSIM, they are facing the issue of eSIM iMessage not working.
Although the shift to eSIM is a step toward the future, this disruption in iMessage functionality is really frustrating for some users. So, how can this issue be fixed?
In this guide, I will tell you about the common causes and troubleshooting solutions of eSIM iMessage not working and if there is any way to restore iMessage functionality.
Why is iMessage not Working After Switching to eSIM?
As you know, eSIM connectivity is the modern means of communication, so the issues it brings to iMessage are also new for users. Let me state the most common reasons that halt iMessage functionality:
- eSIM Activation Issues: Besides a three-step activation process, your eSIM may not be activated correctly. This will lead to iMessage not working, resulting in phone number registration failing.
- Carrier Restrictions: Not all carriers support eSIM services, and some regional carrier restrictions prevent eSIM iMessage from working.
- Network Connectivity Problems: iMessage works with stable Internet connections. It will not work if you are connected to a weak Wi-Fi or data connection.
- Apple ID or Device Settings Errors: The Wrong Apple ID credentials or settings can cause iMessage functionality to fail to activate.
- Software Bugs: eSIM works perfectly if the software is updated regularly and there are no glitches. If the iOS version is outdated, there will be an iMessage activation issue.
Common Causes of eSIM iMessage Issues & How to Fix Them?
Check iMessage Activation Status
A frequent problem might be the failure to activate. Therefore, you should:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Select Messages.
- Switch iMessage off and then back on after a brief period.
- Select Send and Receive to verify the account information displayed, including your phone number.
- If you dont find your phone number, tap Use Your Apple ID for iMessage for signing in.
Restart Your iPhone
Restarting a phone always fixes small problems, as everything gets refreshed after that.
- Press and Hold the power button of your iPhone.
- Slide to Power off.
- After some time, power it on.
Update Carrier Settings
Wrong or old settings could lead to iMessage activation failure. You need to:
- Tap Settings> Genera> About.
- Check for updates. Install them, if any!
Reset Network Settings
Incorrect network settings could cause this. To resolve this, you should:
- Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Enter your passcode to confirm.
- Once reset, wait for the device to restart and connect again.
Remove and Reinstall eSIM
When faced with challenges, the greatest strategy is to persevere. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the eSIM if the activation issues persist. Here’s what you should do:
- Tap Settings> Cellular.
- Select your activated eSIM plan to remove it and tap Remove Cellular Plan.
- Reinstall the eSIM by scanning the QR code or using the app.
- Restart the device and check if iMessage is working.
Verify Apple ID and Sign Out/In
Technical glitches often lead to bad links of Apple iD with iMessage. You need to:
- Tap Settings> Your Name> Sign Out.
- Restart your device.
- Sign In and check iMessage functionality.
Confirm a Reliable Network Connection
- Verify that your Internet connection is stable.
- If you are using any VPNs or proxies, turn them off.
Contact Your Carrier
If nothing sorts out the issues, you need to reach out to carrier support.
Alternative Solutions for iMessage Not Working With eSIM
The amazing thing about technology is that there is always an alternative to get the task done. If the troubleshooting solutions are of no use, you can:
- Use a Physical SIM Temporarily: The activation process varies from carrier to carrier. Some may require physical SIM activation before you can switch to eSIM.
- Factory Reset Your Device: When you feel stuck and have no options, a factory reset is your savior. It will make your phone work like new.
- Use a Third-Party Messaging App: You can also use alternative messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Viber and wait for iMessage to start working.
