Why is eSIM Not Popular Yet? Updated Analysis of 2026!

Whenever new technology is introduced in the world, there are two types of responses given to it. One group of people admired it and went for it, the other group, with a different mindset stuck with the old one running perfectly for them. The same is happening in the eSIM scenario!

Besides being the most flexible, convenient, and advanced technology, users are still buying physical SIM cards, leaving eSIMs on hold. Why is eSIM not popular, or why do users think that they can ignore eSIMs?

To kill the curiosity and find the logic behind why eSIMs are not becoming the main focus for users, I have gathered some research in this blog. Let’s investigate the barriers, the reasons, and the possible facts that tell us why eSIM is not popular yet!

What is an eSIM, and how does it work?

A smart feature that comes built-in to your device and allows you to connect with the world virtually. eSIM is a virtually activated SIM for your device that lets you connect with local carriers of any coverage destination in the world.

You do not need any SIM swapping or standing in lines to buy a SIM card. Just select your plan online, buy one, activate through QR code scanning, and thats it. You will get seamless connectivity wherever you go in the world by just tapping to connect to the carrier of your choice. It's like going digital, eco-friendly, and more secure with mobile connectivity!

With all of this introduction several years ago, eSIM is still not popular among users!

The Current State of eSIM Adoption!

According to the current analysis about eSIM in 2026, every smartphone manufacturer is launching eSIM-compatible devices. Even mobile phone juggernaut Apple has launched some models that are without physical SIM card slots.

The bad news is that mobile manufacturer understand their buyers, that’s why they are still launching phones with physical SIM slots. These smartphones are for the lower-end or mid-range budget users. So this keeps the physical SIM demand alive.

Moreover, carrier companies in many countries are still not providing or supporting eSIM services. Some thought that they had a very low market for eSIMs, and some are just good at selling their physical SIMs. Overall, things like these are contributing to the lack of support for eSIMs.

Where is eSIM Most Popular?

You will be glad to know that not everywhere in the world, but eSIM has a market, and people are buying because they understand the flexibility and convenience of eSIM. You will find eSIM the most popular in:

• Europe & North America - High user demand because people love to adopt technology that comforts them.
• Asia & Middle East - A fifty-fifty situation between eSIM and physical SIM cards. They are using both.
• Africa & Latin America - Almost every carrier has a limitation on eSIM services, making these regions the worst environment for eSIM services.

Why isn’t eSIM More Popular?

There may be a rare chance that anyone in the world is not aware of mobile connectivity or SIM cards. But there are the following reasons that are forcing the unpopularity of eSIMs:

Lack of Awareness

Well, the biggest reason that makes eSIM less popular is that people only know about physical SIM cards. Physical SIM Card users are happy using them, and no one wants to learn about new technology, because they dont need to. There is a plethora of myths that prevent people from learning about eSIM technology. People think it's a tech-expert job to activate an eSIM, so do the carriers think there is no market for them, and they never try to advertise for eSIMs. Results in a lack of awareness for eSIM in the mobile market.

Device Compatibility Issues

Another reason is the limited, specific availability of high-end devices that are eSIM-compatible. You will find less eSIM eSIM-supported models in the market, rather than mid-range and most Android phones available with physical SIMs. Due to less awareness and being an expensive feature, the mobile manufacturers are only offering the eSIM feature in their flagship models. People with low budgets are not able to use eSIM.

Limited Carrier Support

Carrier companies are the biggest barrier to the eSIM market. Why? Because they are reluctant to support eSIMs:

• The fear for carriers is losing customers because of switching networks. eSIM allows you to switch between networks by just tapping, where SIM card users need to buy a new SIM everytime to change the network.
• An ancient structure with zero upgrade of the infrastructure, carriers dont want to upgrade it because it involves a huge amount of money.
• Sky-high roaming charges are still paying carriers a fortune, making their interest low in the eSIM technology market.

Complexity in Activation and Setup

The handling of technology is a hot topic between the digitally progressed people and old school ones. Physical SIM configuration is easy for some old-school lads. They just open the SIM tray because they know how to and place their SIMs, and thats it. Where the eSIM requires an activation process, profile building, and more carrier settings to follow. Besides this eSIM activation process is the simplest of all, but many mobile users are not used to it. They thought that it should be a tech-savvy guy who can activate the eSIM.

Regional & Regularity Limitations

The authority level reason for eSIM not getting popular is the restrictions that are applied to eSIM usage. The government may have concerns and ask carrier companies to do a personal verification by calling eSIM activators to visit. The concerns that local restrictions or government regulations pose to data security, fraud prevention, law enforcement requirements, and the business interests of the telecom operators.

These factors are the reasons that eSIM is not popular yet. To be fully operational and for everyone to enjoy flexibility and convenience, these reasons should be surpassed. The result will be more digitally engaged users with a lot more comfort, a hassle-free and happy traveling experience, and an eco-friendly environment with fewer plastic SIM cards.

Perceived Lack of Control Over SIM Management

SIM management is the main reason that more users still vote for physical SIM cards. As the eSIM technology is new, with a lack of awareness among users and availability in the local markets, people are not used to it. Moreover, with a physical SIM, users feel more in control. They can:

• Take out the SIM card from one device and tuck it into the other easily, but for eSIM, they need to remove it from one and reinstall it on the other.
• When not in use, user can remove their physical SIM card and keep it safe, whereas eSIM need to be reinstall every time.
• People like local numbers to be on roaming when they travel because eSIM does not work with carrier-locked phones.

Will eSIM Become the Future Standard?

With the growth potential of 20% by 2034, eSIM technology will take over in the future. Besides the challenges and everything, the flexibility and convenience of the eSIM technology will be appreciated soon.

The following are the trends that support eSIM popularity and make it grow:

• The launch of Apple's new iPhones without physical SIM slots, only offering eSIM for connectivity.
• A large number of Android flagship smartphones are launching with an eSIM-compatibility feature.
• Featured options of eSIM in IoT devices like smartwatches, home automation, and connected devices.
• More Mobile carriers are adopting eSIM because users are demanding, especially those who travel.
