What is stored on a SIM card?
SIM card stores the subscriber information, like International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), authentication key, phone number, and contacts
SIM card stores the user's information, like International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), authentication key, phone number, and contacts. SIM is a small integrated card that helps networks access your device and allows you to make calls and texts.
In this article, I will discuss the data stored on the SIM card and the steps to confirm which information is stored. Moreover, does the digital SIM offer more storage or not?
Understanding the SIM Card
A Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) is the chip used in devices and stores the authentication data of the subscriber. When you insert the SIM card in the phone, it connects to the mobile network provider.
The SIM has a unique number network that helps the provider identify you and ensure authorised access. Whether you have a physical SIM or an eSIM card, it acts as the bridge between the cellular network and your phone.
What Information Is Stored on a SIM Card?
SIM cards store a critical type of data that contributes to ensuring smooth communication and security.
1. International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI)
International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) is the unique code that represents your account to the carrier. It is like your ID that helps the carrier to recognise your phone and enable you to make calls and access data.
2. Authentication Key (Ki)
The authentication key is the code that ensures the authenticity of your network connection. It is stored on the SIM and improves the security of your mobile communication.
3. Phone Number and Network Data
Phone numbers are also associated with the SIMs helps in identification on the mobile network. It also has Mobile Country Code (MCC) and Mobile Network Code (MNC) to locate your device and provide better signals.
4. Text Messages and Contacts
Older versions of the SIMs also stored limited text and contact information. But now the latest phones have the cloud storage option, which frees the SIM from storage limitations.
5. Personal Identification Number (PIN) and Security Data
Personal Identification Number (PIN) is the code that safeguards the SIM cards. It is like the authentication key that prevents your SIM from being misuse.
Storage Capacities of SIM Cards
The physical SIM card storage capacity ranges from 8 KB to 256 KB, or up to 512 KB for some advanced eSIMs. There is enough space to store the network data, authentication credentials, a limited number of contacts, and SMS.
The modern devices rely on internal or cloud storage to save large files, apps, and multimedia files. SIM is generally related to identification and security.

How eSIMs Are Changing SIM Storage?
The latest eSIM technology stored data, including IMSI, authentication key, and network information, similar to the physical SIM but with format changes. The SIM works like traditional SIMs, but it looks different. Embedded SIM is integrated into the devices and can’t be removed.
It digitally stores the user's information and offers enhanced security. You can activate the eSIM in your phone with a QR code scan. It is the ideal connectivity means for international travellers.
