Is My Phone Waterproof? Confirm the IP Rating

No, your phone is not waterproof. It can be water-resistant and survive in several conditions, but not under all water pressures, according to the official IP rating. If your mobile phone accidentally fell into the pool, you expect its survival according to water resisting ability.

Finding the answer to this question is essential because water damage is not covered under warranty. In this article, I will explain whether your phone is waterproof or water-resistant. Moreover, I will discuss the IP rating and what the ideal phones are for you to avoid water damage.

Waterproof Vs Water-resistant: Key Difference

Both terms are used interchangeably from time to time, but they are distinct from each other.

Waterproof

Waterproof means that the object can’t be damaged by water or other liquids. Water can’t get into it, whether it is fully submerged underwater for hours, it still works fine. Modern electronics are generally waterproof, but not phones.

Water-resistant

Water-resistant means that you have the fancy raincoat, but still, water makes its way in it. Similarly, water-resistant phones can handle the sudden splash or a few raindrops, but if they get the long exposure to water, they can be damaged.

Similarly, if your phone is submerged for a long time, it will lose its functionality.

How to Find Out If Your Phone Is Waterproof?

You can confirm whether your phone is waterproof or not by checking the phone’s IP or the (Ingress Protection) rating. It is generally listed on the box, or you can check it on the manufacturer's website.

If the rating is not listed, it means your phone is not officially certified as waterproof. Now, let's get into the details of IP rating.

Understanding the Waterproof Ratings: IP68, IP69, and IPX8

Is my phone waterproof? It depends on the IP rating. IP refers to the ingress protection, the level at which the device is resistant to dust and water. The number with IP represents the level of protection and the resistant.

It generally has two numerical values, like IP67. The first indicates the resistance against dust, which is from 0 or 6. While the other shows protection against liquid, which ranges from 0 to 9.

Another level exists, shown as X, which represents that the device is not tested for dust.

The following are the values you generally see on your phones.

IP68

The number 6 with IP indicates that the device is fully dust-proof. The 8 refers to the ability to handle being submerged in water. This rating is ideal to safe your phone from accidental pool drops or using it in the rain. Phones with this rating allow you to get underwater photos.

IP69

Number 6 with IP shows the complete dust protection. Similarly, 9 indicates that the phone can resist high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, often around 80–100 bar. The devices of this rating are ideal for the tough environment.

IPX8

The X means that the device is not tested for dust protection. 8 refers to the device's ability to withstand continuous immersion in water, usually beyond 1 meter. These phones are safe for swimming, snorkelling, and sudden drops in water.
